Program Overview
(First Graders visit the Art room once a week for 45 minutes)
The First Grade Art Program provides hands-on experiences and opportunities in order to give children freedom to express themselves creatively, build confidence by handling basic art materials, translate personal feelings and ideas into visual forms, and develop their own artistic potential as fully as possible.
Experiences are also provided with varied art materials in order to help strengthen hand-eye coordination, develop fine motor skills and visual and auditory memory. It also encourages observation skills and helps children to develop an appreciation for “creating” the physical world around them.
Children begin to develop various basic art skills and concepts involving good housekeeping, organization and procedures, and proper work habits as well as listening skills and visual directions.
The many projects created are based in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage, etc. and when appropriate, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary connections within the First Grade curriculum.
